Nina Lu supplemental response #5
I get a lot of comments on my TikTok of "Oxford study" or just "Another Oxford Study victim" whenever I post my boyfriend (for context, he's White and I'm asian). I knew this term had something to do with Asian women dating White men more and the fetishization of Asian women in this specific interracial relationship, so I thought this term actually originated from a study that Oxford University did on this phenomenon, so I tried to look for the study and read it. After doing a deep dive to find out what this term means, I found out that it was made up by the TikTok community, that one person posted about how frustrated they were that Asian girls always get taken by White men, and a viewer commented "Oxford should do a study to get to the bottom of this phenomenon" and that's where the term originated from.
I also saw a video talking about how this term perpetuates the idea that Asian women are not mature enough to know on their own when they are being fetishized. Do you think that this term could be harmful by contributing to that idea? How dangerous is it that TikTok make something up and have it gain the awareness and attention of the masses? Should we be more careful when digesting information from a platform such as TikTok where anyone and everyone could have a say on a topic?
