Liam Kenney - Supplemental Post #3

This weekend, I went to a taping of America's Got Talent with USC's student run radio station, KXSC. This is the first time I've been to something like this and it was a helpful reminder about the construction and constant upkeep of celebrity image and also how stars remain relevant even when not working on major productions. In between each act, it was fascinating to watch each of the judge's assistants run out to give them their phone, touch up their makeup, and make sure they remained flawless in front of the numerous cameras capturing each and every angle of their faces. The whole production was massive, and they kept us in the room to grab reactions which they chop up and insert into episodes across the whole season, everything about the show is engineered to appear as live as possible, but it's all about the construction of the tension leading up to their judgement. We only saw one dude get buzzed out, but I have a sneaking suspicion he was a ringer placed in the show by the producers to ensure not every act made it through to the follow up shows. I had never considered how all of the musicians clearly had been sound checked during set up, and getting to see each element of the behind the scenes development of the show was really interesting. It was a fun day, but I don't think I would do it again!

  1. Supplemental #3?? 4?? — Wow this sounds so fun! I wonder how “not live” this was and more directed— did they re-do takes? Is there someone who can dictate if something needs to be re-shot? I feel like reality tv shows are always such an interesting thing for me, never knowing how much truth is even actually preserved in the finished product.
