Diana Motta Morales- Core Response #2
Barry King’s “Articulating stardom" highlights the misconception that “stardom is a strategy of performance that is an adaptive response to the limits and pressures exerted upon acting in the mainstream cinema”(pg 169). I think this quote is super interesting. King suggests that stardom in cinema is not a result of talent or charisma, it is actually a strategic performance actors exercise in response to challenges in the mainstream film industry. In this quote “adaptive response” implies that people who seek fame may consciously or subconsciously develop a niche personality that aligns with the demands of the “mainstream cinema”. The first person who came to mind when analyzing this quote was Reneé Rapp. She is often viewed as someone who is “unhinged” and “real”, many people applaud her for “lacking media training” since it shows who she “truly” is. However, this is untrue, the way she is acting and portraying her image is all calculated and a performance she and her team knows will bring attraction. Reneé Rapp’s attitude and behavior on talk shows gives off the impression that she will say the first thing that pops into her head in a cute and snarky tone. This tone makes her more likable given the fact that the audience is so used to artists having rehearsed answers and being limited with their questions. The openness and relatability she performs makes people think she's just like them thus creating a stronger connection to not only her character in films but her as a person. The strategic adaptation can involve characteristics such as crafting one's image, branding and being able to cater to broad/ specific audiences. In this specific example I think the way Reneé Rapp has shaped her image is genius, humanizing herself in a competitive and cut throat environment like mainstream cinema is just what individuals, especially what younger generations want to see. In essence, I agree with King’s statement, arguing that stardom is not just about talent but the way one strategically maneuvers the film industry to achieve recognition and success.
