Sierra Dague - Supplemental Response 2

Let me get this out of the way… I am Freud’s biggest hater. I could rant about all of the reasons for this, but I’ll save myself the trouble of writing it and you the trouble of reading it. Just understand that the fact that I do not appreciate his work in any way is the basis for this post.

Freud’s contribution to the understanding of clitoral orgasms as being immature and vaginal orgasms as being the only legitimate form of pleasure set women back years. Having to read his work in my previous feminist classes was nothing short of frustrating. Apparently, Ann Koedt must have felt the same way because in 1970 she published “The Myth of the Vaginal Orgasm” in response to Freud’s views. Not only is it humorous to read, but it also righteously corrects his wrongs. I recommend anyone who was frustrated reading the summary of how women’s sexuality was understood in the 50’s in Chapter 1 of Heavenly Bodies read this as well.

Koedt conducts a wonderful explanation of female anatomy, discussing why vaginal orgasms are a myth, why clitoral orgasms are not immature, and why women are falsely understood to be ‘frigid.’ She writes, “It is important to emphasize that Freud did not base his theory upon a study of woman’s anatomy, but rather upon his assumptions of woman as an inferior appendage to man.”

It’s sad that we live in a patriarchal society. Because I wish Koedt got quoted as often as Freud did (and that Freud did not get quoted and praised in his field).
