Liam Kenney - Supplemental Post #2

This week, I took a quick trip to Mood Fabrics where, in the parking lot, I made eye contact with Jack Donoghue. The Lana Del Rey wiki describes Jack Donoghue as “an American musician, singer, songwriter and record producer. He is a member of the bands Salem and Young Cream.” I was a fan of his group Salem prior to the “hard launch,” of his short lived relationship with Lana Del Rey in 2022, and have remained a fan ever since. My short encounter seemingly flipped the script on me, as in just a single moment of eye contact with Jack I could tell he instantly recognized that I knew who he was. As I walked by, I wondered if I had overplayed my hand, if I was dressed like someone who might know him (I was) but it had me asking myself: When do celebrities get to the point where they begin to assume everybody knows them? The thought of being someone so instantly recognizable had floated through my consciousness before, but the true horror of never being able to become incognito, to blend in with others, really got to me in that moment; Foucault’s panopticon exemplified in a thirty second jaunt through a retail parking lot. I decided not to say anything, I was worried I wouldn’t be cool enough or that he wouldn’t react in a satisfactory way, but I did enjoy texting my friends afterwards. In the first few weeks of this class, I stated that I didn’t engage with star culture, but I now realize I absolutely engage in fan culture, in star culture, in a way where I can allow myself to think of it in a more esoteric way (total eye roll, I know, but maybe admitting is the first step to growing out of the art school desire to engage exclusively with more niche sides to pop culture?)
