Harlee Buford - Supplemental Post #2
Last month, it was announced that a reboot of Wizards of Waverly Place was in the works. I'm usually not a fan of reboots as they are never as good as the original and tend to be underwhelming. However, unlike most reboots, the original show's main cast, including Selena Gomez, Jake T. Austin, David Henri, Maria Canals-Barrera, and David DeLuise, are all coming back to their roles either as guest stars or series regulars, leaving the entire Russo family intact.
Yet, the show will not revolve around Selena Gomez's character, Alex Russo, who pretty much carried the original show. She was charming, funny, relatable, and of course, a troublemaker. Nevertheless, she captured the hearts of millions. The reboot is supposed to be about Justin Russo, who had given up his powers to marry his human wife, raising his two sons and being swept back into Wiz Tech and thus wizardry.
As the show is not going to be about Alex, but rather Justin, many fans aren't as excited or hopeful for the reboot, even though Selena is supposed to be a guest star. Also, the premise is almost the same as the original's, the only real difference being that Justin does not have a daughter and Wiz Tech is included. The family dynamic is the same (Justin's father also gave up his powers to marry his human wife)--the only difference in the reboot is that Justin will not have a daughter. Without an original twist on the former show, I don't have high hopes, especially if the show mainly focuses on Justin instead of Alex, Max, or all three siblings.
What do you think of the reboot? Are you excited or hopeful for the new series? And what do you think of reboots as a whole?

Supplemental post #1:
ReplyDeleteI think it’s very interesting how they’ve set up the reboot with the exact family dynamic they had in the original show. I think this is the network/writers’ way of trying to give us viewers a balance of what is new and what is familiar. I think the reason why the show won’t be centered around Selena’s character is not only because she’s busier/might have requested the show not to be about her, but also because the creators of the show are looking to launch new, younger talent that we could follow— they need these new characters to be in the age range that is in the familiar preteen to teen years. This way they’ll have a fresh perspective to be working with, adventures and “coming-of-age” storylines that only characters from that age can offer. Yet that is interesting because it’s NOT what the audience obviously wants: if we were in control we’d be putting selena back in the spotlight, trying to relive our nostalgic days of the original wizards of waverly place. This same phenomenon happened with the “That 70’s Show” reboot, “That 90’s Show” (I think that’s what that’s called). We only have our main stars from the original series, Eric and Donna, for the first episode to launch their daughter’s storyline, and SHE will eventually end up being the main character. There is a passing of the baton kind of situation happening here— almost sending the audience an underlying message that we shouldn’t be invested in the lives of such “old” characters— that the most interesting parts of their lives are over because they’ve already “come of age.” Which I personally disagree with.
