Megan Sullivan - Supplemental Post #2

 Here are some links I found interesting this week: 

1. Social media influencer Amelia Dimoldenberg was appointed as social media ambassador and red carpet correspondent for the Oscars where she will hold interviews with stars at the event. In this interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she says "I'd probably be starstruck to interview Martin Scorsese. He seems so funny from watching his daughter's TikTok's of them together." 

After reading this article, I felt that it was a really interesting example that builds on our conversation the past two weeks about the role technology has played in reshaping the relationship between stars and fans. Social media, in this example, has provided Dimoldenberg with an increased access and intimacy to Scorsese's personal life. Not only does she indicate that she uses social media to learn more about a star that she is a fan of, but she also points out aspects of his life that cause her to make a generalization about his personality. Thus, if she engages in an interview with Scorsese she has additional content about his personality that she can use to tailor the interview, perhaps asking specific questions or cracking jokes she thinks he will find funny. While Dimoldenberg may be in a privileged situation to conduct such an interview with a star she is a fan of, she is currently still simply a fan, hoping to one day meet her admired star. 

This example also shows how the use of social media to "get to know a star" could be potentially dangerous. Fans can only make generalizations such as "Martin Scorsese is a funny guy" based on the information the star puts out there. Even if a star were to post every day, it is extremely difficult to capture the nuances of personality that exists in the in-between moments. As a result, these generalizations can be false, leading to the spread of misinformation. 

Finally,  I find it fascinating that it is Scorsese's performance with his daughter in Tiktok videos that Dimoldenberg calls to attention, despite many of the notable creative works Scorsese is famous for.

While there are many potential areas of inquiry within Richard Dyer’s (1998) Stars , I find myself gravitating towards a fundamental question: what is the star’s relationship to celebrity? Are the two synonymous? I find that the terms are often interchangeable colloquially, so long as they both refer to the traditional Hollywood celebrity. But how does one define celebrity? Payton Ewalt, Pau Brunet-Fuertes, Devin Glenn - Realist or Naturalist Style

Group 1: Realist or Naturalist Style Definition: The naturalistic acting method involves creating a character based on a realistic representation, avoiding exaggeration and artificial mannerisms. As Barry Kind defines it in his article "Articulating Stardom," "Naturalism [is] the mode of the individual, his or her utterances, behavior and appearance in everyday setting, gives a privileged access to personal and collective realities" (172). The acting blurs in an impersonation that does not articulate ideas of characterization directly related to facilitating plot signifiers. This mode of acting conflicts with some notions of stardom, as "the actor confronts problems in characterization that relate to his or her being as a general cultural object rather than a theatrical object" (King 173).
